Mediterranean wheat is a soft red wheat that was introduced to the U.S. from Genoa, Italy in 1819 by John Gordon of Wilmington, Delaware. For the next 40 years it spread westward taking the deepest roots in the Texas panhandle. Was known as one of the highest yielding wheats in the "humid portions of Texas and Oklahoma". Popular because 1) more resistant to Hessian fly damage than other varieties; 2) several days earlier than the commonly grown winter wheats; 3) Rust resistant (because of its earliness), high yielder of especially heavy grain; 4) adapted to poorer soils than most varieties. Grown in AL, AR, DE, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, MD, MI, MS, MO, NE, NJ, NY, NC, OH, OK, PA, RI, TN, TX, VA, and WV.
