Very small samples available; may prefer colder weather- see Joseph's description in next column. Mountaineer is a hull-less perennial rye developed by Tim Peters by crossing annual domestic rye, Secale cereale, with a wild perennial relative, Secale montanum. Grow reports indicate that the plants can get 6 to 10 feet tall. Reliably winter hardy. Best planted in late summer. Prefer growing in cold weather. "Tim Peter's Perennial Rye" can be considered a synonym for Mountaineer. When Tim originally made his crosses, he planted the best of them onto a roadside near his farm. They have naturalized, and are still growing feral there today.
