Petkus Spring Rye

Spring rye “Petkus”: This variety came to Sweden from Germany around 1870 and became the foundation for further breeding and processing. The variety was developed by the Lochow family at the Petkus Estate in Brandenburg, Germany. I have not grown this variety but from what I have heard and read about it from other farmers it seems like a fast growing cereal with good resistance and good yield. Spring rye has just like landrace wheat become popular with smaller farms and mills, and also sourdough bakeries since it’s an interesting product. Winter rye yields more but spring rye can be grown in places where the climate is not adapted to winter sowing.  Seed, photo and story from Johannes Adolfsson.
