Swiss Spelt is a long season type (Winter habit) and should be planted in the fall, well before there is any snow cover. Plant as spikelets, not as naked seeds. Here are some observations; it is necessary to make sure that a suitable planter is available for the spelt spikelets, which are planted somewhat deeper than naked wheat seed. Also, spelt is harvested gently so that spikelets are harvested without threshing out the grain. This means that on cleaning there will be good separation from most weed seeds. Then the spikelets need de-hulling with an efficient machine that does not break the kernels or damage the germ. Expect up to 30 - 40% loss by weight from de-hulling. Waste makes great chicken food.
