By taking this course, you will get a better understanding of:

  • Basic seed biology, selection, and genetics
  • The significance of regionally adapted seeds
  • What it takes to start your own seed exchange, seed library or small bio-regional seed company

The latest and most concentrated version of Seed School in 24 short, 10-minute lessions.  Bill McDorman takes us on a journey to a deeper understanding of seeds. Bill McDorman has been teaching seed saving for more than 40 years.  In 2010, he and his wife Belle Starr organized his experiences and knowledge into what became the now famous 6-day Seed School.  After several years, the best of the 6-day program was used to create Seed School In a Day.  At the urging of Greg Peterson and the Urban Farm University, this material was further refined into 8 online lectures known as Seed School Online, still available through Urban Farm.  Seed School Essentials is a further update and refinement into stand-alone modules comprised of short 10 minutes lectures.  These lectures include snippets from many of experts and heroes of the diversity seed movement including Dr. Bradley Tonnessen, Dr. Margot Bagley, and François Meienberg to help to shine a light on important topics to help you understand your role as a seed steward.

Topics List: Seed Biology & Structure, Pollination & Breeding Systems, Seed Selection & Genetics, Wild Seeds, Harvesting Cleaning & Storing, Seed Industry History and Patenting, Seed Enterprises, and Dispelling the Myths of Seed Saving.
