Nigrescens

Nigrescens is a Russian landrace variety that is extremely early. It flowered 60 days from transplanting and was harvested 87 days from transplanting. It is fairly tall (3 1/2 – 4 foot) and experienced some lodging in early August after heavy rainfall. Nigrescens is an awned, short grain type with a blackish-gray hull and a slightly reddish bran color. Cooked up, I was very pleased with Nigrescens flavor. Like most brown rice varieties it is a bit nutty, but Nigrescens has a richer, more complex flavor. The texture was soft, just shy of creamy. It worked great as just plain boiled rice and as fried rice.
